A personal journey of discovery

Have you seen the changes taking place in the world of medicine today? And the speed of those changes?

All of us have much to thank the medical profession for, and many of you who will read this will know of someone who is alive right now because of the dedication, knowledge and skill of a doctor, surgeon or nurse, who took the trouble to ensure that they got the correct care in a timely manner. We trust our doctors and hold them in very high esteem. They have trained for years to be the best they can be, in whatever field they choose to practice. And we, the general public, benefit from all that expertise.

Year by year, more and more types of treatments are becoming available, and more and more resources are poured into an ever deepening pot, as the public demand better and more expensive services. But, we can all see that demand far exceeds supply and the system that has served us well since the NHS was formed is now on the verge of collapse. Doctors are running all the time just to keep up with their patient numbers and 'todays' best practice guidelines. Any wonder that you can't get an appointment, is it?

Successive governments have forced doctors to become accountants, and surgeons to play "god", with whatever resources are allocated to them. The drug companies just see us all as slot machines, into which they pop whatever is the latest pill and demand regular jackpots for the privilege.

Whatever benefits antibiotics were in the past, is being, has been, eroded to naught, because of over use, not just by prescribing them to us, but because they have been pumped into cattle and animal feed as well, squandering their potency in the name of profit. Now, if you have to take anything from the bug killing list of drugs, they have to be so strong they do you more harm than the bugs ever did. You have to combat the strains of superbugs, made super by the overuse of antibiotics in the first place. So, instead of taking one drug to do the job, you need two or three. One to increase the potency of the second, and the third to combat the side-effects of the first two. Of course, all this comes at a much higher price, because the R & D establishing that fact, has to be covered thousands of times over. Have you any idea what drugs actually cost nowadays? Honestly, the prescription charge doesn't come anywhere near most of them!

I know I rant, I can't help it! Sometimes you watch the news or hear a discussion program on the TV, and you just want to scream as you listen to a politician or an "expert" in some field, usually the medical one, spouting insane rubbish about something they are supposed to know about, and you're sure this is just the latest guessing_half-study_semi-expert_street-poll-compiled-report that was thought out on the back of a fag packet and has now somehow become official policy.

Given the conditions under which they work, it's a wonder anyone would ever volunteer to join the medical profession, but they do, and sometimes they even perform miracles. Just look at the types of operation we now see as routine, hip replacement, heart by-passes, cataract surgery. All of these, and countless other operations, are life changing surgeries, but they are now everyday occurrences and it's likely we all know of someone in our family who have had one or more of these types of conditions.

Yet, at the start of this new century, there is a huge movement toward complementary medicine, never before seen in the western world, and certainly never more-so than by todays younger generations. Why is that?

Perhaps one of the reasons for this is the fact that western medicine has become like a car parts department. This bit's broke, so you plug in a new one and away you go. Increasingly we go to the doctor with undefined illnesses. We just don't feel well. The doctor does blood tests, urine tests and lots of other tests, concluding that because all the results are normal, there is no explanation for your illness and therefore you're not really ill at all. The 'bit' you need is out of stock, or doesn't exist on the parts department shelf. Actually, (and they don't like to say this out loud) you're imagining it!!

Many people who have received this response from their family doctor, no longer accept it as the final word. We have come to expect there to be an answer, which of course, is true in most cases. A patient knows if they are feeling ill. Even if you concede that it's an imagined illness, and manifests itself as nothing more than a bad feeling, a pain, or an emotional state, that doesn't make it any less real. People are looking for answers and many are now finding those answers in alternative therapies.
There are many types of complementary therapy, and it must be said that, many of them are variations on a theme, but I have highlighted some of the ones that I am interested in, either because I have seen them work, because I know another practitioner who uses them regularly and has a large client list who also believe they work, or because I practice them myself at The Haven Healing Centre.

  • It's important to have alternatives, so that when you receive the "brush off", however unintentioned, you have somewhere else to go to look for answers. This is where the danger lies, of course! The potential to be "ripped off" or "suckered in" is high, especially when there are so many ways to go. Many doctors laugh at alternative or complementary medicine and point to the scientific method of acceptance for Western medicine, ignoring the fact that some of these alternative healing methods pre-date Western medicine by 50 or 60 times. Thousands of years before the scientific method was even conceived.

The truth remains, that the methods of science cannot account for the success of many types of alternative treatment, not the least of which, of course, is Homeopathy, which is regularly pilloried by the press. All of which tells us that the scientific method hasn't fully worked out what it is that makes us tick. The body is still, despite all that we know about it, a mystery that may go beyond the results of physical experimentation.
It's not fair, or reliable, to simply say that because something can't be scientifically verified, it can't be true.
Einstein said: Truth is what stands the test of experience. Albert Einstein

Conventional medicine has limits, real limits, and is remarkebly quick to impose those limits on other forms of treatment. Perhaps it is wiser to accept the obvious, that there isn't only one form of medicine, and that no one form of medicine will cure all. The fact remains, complementary medicine is very different from conventional medicine, coming at the same problem from completely different angles. And, it is those differences that we need to marry, at least in our minds, if not in the surgery. Both are important, and it is not a criticism that either forms of medicine cannot cure every patient.

Complementary therapists have no qualms about referring a patient back to their doctor, but the other way round is almost non-existent. Well almost! Because, actually, some enlightened doctors are now seeing that there are indeed benefits to alternate or complementary therapies. These tend to be younger doctors who may have looked at some complementary therapies in more depth during their training than perhaps their older colleagues.

I look forward to the day when conventional and complementary medicine are practised in the same building. Some places they are, but mostly this is not the case, and the two remain incompatible. Whatever the answers, and however you decide to proceed, be guided by friends or recommendation, until you are able to make informed choices of your own. Few healers and healing centres survive without glowing recommendations. The Haven Healing Centre intends to be here for many years to come!
